Late 2009 iMac randomly freezing

Every since i updated to high sierra my iMac has become unusable. It works for about an hour then freezes, and sometimes it doesn't even last that long. I've tried:

  • NVRAM
  • SMC
  • Boot in Safe Mode (works)
  • Logged into a guest account (still freezes)
  • Reinstalling
  • Wiping then reinstalling
  • Rolled back to sierra but that was freezing also

And i have nothing on here to backup so i don't need to worry about that at the moment. I have noticed that every time I delete everything from my cache folder it works just fine.

What you are describing and what you have attempted indicate it's likely a hardware issue. My guess is the HD is failing. If you want to keep the computer consider replacing the HD with a SSD which will improve performance dramatically. I would get a second External Hard Disk, create a bootable clone using SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner and then replace the drive and then boot from the clone and format the new drive and finally restore from the clone to the new internal drive.
