"__" is not registered with iMessage

When using iMessage from iMac Sierra (and High Sierra) frequently get "xxx-xxx-xxxx" (without hyphens) is not registered with iMessage even though they have an iphone and imessage.

Have tried adding the country code which is already in their contact card ...makes no difference.

Have just asked a person today to try his apple ID email. That will most likely work but weird about the phone number ...it seems erratic on which numbers work and which do not though all are using late model iPhone.

I use android so my number won't work with iMessage.

Cheers ..

all thoughts welcome

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR THOUGHTS AND TIME on this issue. It is resolved per apple ID explanation below.

LoL...I think I've made it sound more complicated than it is/was. BTW ...I worked with my Apple rep to roll back my iMac from High Sierra to Sierra ...which has other inconveniences when one's internal is SSD and external is HDD. That is off-topic. I've never been able to repopulate my imessage chat history although I can load each one manually -off-topic again ...forgive me.

Apple ID

I was trying to initiate an imessage with someone for the first time using only their phone number ...when I found out you need their apple ID for iMessage I got theirs and used it and it is working fine. Conversely these same people are registered with FaceTime ....which makes it's own card up in contacts ...strange but "whatever".

I don't use Facetime.

re: apple ID ...I have two official apple ID's one carries a balance for purchasing at iTunes and the App store I don't use it at all with messaging as the email address was closed years ago.

the other was made ...I forget ...either when I had data reclaimed from a failed external (I didn't realize the technician was doing that) or when I ordered this computer.

There are three email addy's checked under preferences/accounts which say I can be reached for messages at:

one is my apple ID, one is my @iCloud.com and the other is my primary email.

Just looked and see Google Talk in iMessage enabled.

I have iMessage signing into the gmail ID because Google seems to be the best integrated 3rd party platform with Mac OS.

Just giving you info...I AM NOT ASKING YOU TO SOLVE ANYTHING since it is all working

Once again THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND ADVICE.

Cheers ...enjoy your Sunday!! xoxo

Hi,

So on your Mac in Messages > Preferences > Accounts you only list the Apple ID.

It is not linked to an iPhone Number.

This leaves one ID in the Receive At section and no pop up for "Start Conversations from"

Therefore it cannot be that sometimes your app is sending as if it were your iPhone and sometimes trying to send as the Apple ID - there can be issues with Apple ID logins - because you are using one ID and the results are intermittent.

Any chance this centers around the Mac having been Asleep ?

Hi,

I was just trying to show that you only have one ID that is active on your Mac.

Having an iPhone and and Apple ID active can hide some issues but you would not have these with using only one ID.

We then have to look at why it might be intermittent.

The "Not Registered..." error message is too much used in Messages.

At it's simplest it does mean that the ID you chose to send to is not registered. (most commonly iPhones)

It's next use is when said iPhone of contact is Off line from some reason.

You will see it for every Contact you try if your Apple ID is not logged in.

Ideally this should be "Cannot resolve Login with servers and retrieve Contacts info"

Messages can give you two error messages for iMessages connections.

One is the "Not Delivered" statement that appears near a recently sent iMessages.

The other is the "Not Registered" one.

It is the intermittent nature of what you are seeing that concerns me.

Thanks for your reply. In re-reading what I wrote I wasn't clear. I wasn't trying to add "my" phone number and at any rate I don't have an iPhone. I have my apple ID "for me" in preferences.

When I get the "not registered with iMessage" message is when I'm wanting to message someone who is in my Mac contacts and who I know has an iPhone.

I got this person to send me an iMessage to my apple ID and told him to use his Apple id and it connected

Cheers.
