MacBook Pro early 2013 shutdown stalls with black screen and cursor forever

I recently got notified in the App Store that the "macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 Supplemental Update" was available for update. I clicked "Update" and the screen shortly went black with the cursor still showing at its last location. A short while later, the cursor disappeared briefly, then returned in the upper right corner. I could move the cursor with the mouse. Any typing resulted in a "thunk" noise. It stayed this way basically forever. I had to hold the power button to shut it down. Startup seemed to work fine at that point, but the update has not been installed. Once I left it in this stalled state overnight and it was still the same in the morning. No matter what I try, a shutdown and/or restart stalls during the shutdown. I have tried the following suggestions that I found in these communties:

1) Reset the SMC, I did this successively 3 times.

2) Reset the PRAM, I did this successively 3 times.

3) Boot in "Safe Mode", I've done this several times, even with my external devices disconnected.

I probably can't do anymore updates until this is fixed. As suggested in other threads, I'm including the recent output of EtreCheck. Any suggestions for fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.
