Unflagged messages won't go away

I have 2 messages that were previously flagged. I removed the flags but they still appear in the flagged list. I tried all the fixes I found on this site and none worked. I rebuilt the mailbox but that did nothing. I set mail to delete upon quit so I deleted them and quit mail several times. I even restarted my computer more than once but they refuse to go away. They still appear in the flagged list without the flags. How do I fix this once and for all?
