Question: Macbook Pro freezes randomly

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) started to freeze randomly after upgrading to High Sierra. So frustrating. For some reason, the mouse/pointer still works, but the system is unresponsive. Everything else freezes, including the clock seconds.

I've attempted to run FirstAid on the disk, but when doing this, it freezes. There was a time that I tried to leave it in this state, and after many hours, it responded with detecting issues with the disk, and to fix them in recovery mode, etc. But, when I boot into recovery mode and run FirstAid, it doesn't find anything wrong with the disk.

I am trying to avoid a full restore, which as we all know is a painful process of re-setting everything up again. Before I lose a day of my life, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can do to resolve this.

It sounds like a drive gone bad. Backup your files and try this:

Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch

If possible backup your files.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will install the version of OS X you had installed.
