Photos taken with iPhone X are automatically uploaded to iMac Photos.
However, photos posted directly to Photos on iMac fail to appear on iPhone Photos. iCloud is utilized in both instances.
Solution?

Please let us know the following:
What version of iOS are you using on the iPhone X?
What version of macOS are you using on the iMac?
What settings are active in Settings > Photos on the iPhone X?
What settings are active in Photos > Preferences... > iCloud on the iMac?

Try, if ou will be seeing more photos on your iPhone, if you disable "Summarize Photos:"
OK. I've turned off "Summarize Photos." Later today I'll post a pic on the iMac and see if it also appears on iPhone. But don't have any idea how long it might take!
