Can't buy from App Store

Hi, I have just bought a 2nd hand Macbook Pro running El Capitan. I already have an iPad and iPhone and can download both free and paid apps on them. I set the Macbook up on my existing account but when I try to download any app I have to sign in with apple id, this works and I click install then get a message to verify my billing details. I click on this and get an error message on an otherwise blank page as follows :-

Your request produced an error.

Can anyone help, I am new to Macs as I have been a Windows user since Windows 2, I keep hearing about how much better Macs are than a PC and bought this to see if this is right but it's obviously not if I can't add any apps to it. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Thank you for your reply. I have solved (most of) the problem, The exp date and security code were missing in billing info on this Macbook but were present in iPhone, I entered them and all is now OK but that doesn't explain the error message when I clicked on verify. Having said that I can now download apps. So once again thank you for pointing me towards iCloud details.

Yeah, that's certainly weird. I would start by going to System Preferences>iCloud and making sure that you are signed in. Then restart your computer and try again. Also, be sure that you have a consistent internet connection.

Macs are easier to use and (generally) more secure than PCs. Anything after that comes down to preference (and arguably the first item I stated does as well).
