iMac running very slowly.

I have an iMac 21.5-inch mid-2011. We noticed a sharp dropoff in its speed a few months ago and have seen it gradually slow from there. It is now at the point where we need to do something, but I'm hoping the problem is fixable and we don't need to just replace it. It only has 4 GB or RAM so I have considered adding RAM. I did run Etrecheck and this is the report I received:

EtreCheck version: 4.0.4 (4A150)

Report generated: 2018-02-28 10:59:21

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 10:48

Performance: Poor

Problem: Computer is too slow

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Hardware failure - Your machine shut down due to a hardware failure.

Poor performance - EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. This is very unusual.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Upgradeable RAM - This machine has upgradeable RAM that would help its performance.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. It appears to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

First and foremost make sure you have current backup of your hard drive. The report indicates a crash due to a hardware failure.

Uninstall all Symantec software, it's not needed and likely the cause of your slowdown. Uninstall according to the developer's instructions. You can Google "uninstall symantec from mac" to get the instructions.

Run Apple Hardware Test to see if you can determine what failed. How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

You may need to take it into the nearest Apple Genius Bar for a free diagnostic if the tests are inconclusive.

A good place to start is to completely remove all the Symantec (Norton) software. It has been making a mess of Macs since about 1999 and WILL slow your computer. Here are instructions:

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO81114.html

We have the identical iMac except ours has 8GB RAM. Even with the original 4GB it was never slow, and is still a viable tool today. The big difference is that ours has no useless third-party utilities installed. The modern Mac OS takes very good care of itself.

iMac running very slowly.
