Having an issue trying to set up my Airport Extreme (A1521)

Recently purchased an Apple Airport Extreme (A1521) and trying to set it up so that I can use TIme Machine on a wireless network. After following all of the set up directions, the Airport Extreme is showing a blinking amber light on the front and it never turns to green. I would like to use the Airport Extreme as a stand-alone network... any suggestions on how to resolve the issue (to turn that amber light to green). Please advise... Thanks!

Thank you for your comments/suggestions... I found them to be very helpful and informative. After trying to make the Airport Extreme into a access point for the Time Machine backup system (and failing). I decided to "scrap" the wireless backup idea and just go with a direct USB connection to the backup hard drive setup. The Time Capsule option is interesting but after a little research, sounds like I would be in the same situation as with the Airport Extreme. Anyway, I appreciate everyone's input and thanks for the comments.
