itunes displays album artwork in the album list view. The artwork clutters up screen making searching way more difficult than it should be. How can you configure list view of albums or artists to NOT display artwork?

No, because artwork in those views is not optional. Both views are designed for those who recognize their albums visually. The suggested option gives you a view of your tracks without artwork, and the column browser can give you compact lists of artists, albums, genres, etc.

Use the Songs view. Turn off artwork. View > Show View Options. You might also want to enable the column browser. View > Column Browser > Show Column Browser.
