Will not accept pairing code, after upgrade from Phone 5 to Phone X

Got two new iPhone Xs to replace iPhone 5s -- restored all settings at Apple store.

Had to redo pairing to Bluetooth devices - got iPhone X to detect partner, but would not accept pairing code.

Says pairing failed. This happened on a BMW 335 2008 model with iDrive and also with a XLINK-BT box.

Pairing worked fine with 2015 BMW iDrive -- which did not ask for pairing code.

What gives?? Is this a problem with the IOS 11 or software on the partner device (new protocol for Bluetooth)?

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.6
