How do I open files created with Apple Works

I have old files (drawings and text mixed) I created with Apple Works when I was teaching, they were done in 2006. Now I need to access them but Pages will not open them, nor will any of the newer renditions of any of the programs I use.

I am running High Sierra 10.13.3.

Any suggestion for a program which could open these files would be welcomed.

LibreOffice will open both text and drawing files created in AW5 or AW6. The only doubt I have is whether individual vector frames will be preserved, but you can try, or settle for simply having the complete drawing only.

Try LibreOffice. It can open many, but not all, types of AppleWorks & ClarisWorks documents. You can then save the files in a more universally compatible format.
