How do I keep USB ports active in sleep mode (MacBook Air High Sierra 10.13.3)

Back up hard drive powered by USB port loses power when I close the lid. Not at first but after some brief time. Power to hard drive is not supposed to be shut off without first ejecting it.

usb drive improperly ejected when mac goes to sleep I saw a lot of comments on this topic from a few years back. I have not been able to solve this problem and I have tried everything I read in the forums. I use an external USB HDD for Time Machine. It's powered by the USB port. I previously used another brand of external USB HDD that had separate power directly to the drive. It still had the same problem. I've tried setting changes in Energy Saver, Time Machine, and Spotlight. Nothing works. I'm looking for a clear answer with something that works every time. The worst part is that up until about a year and a half ago, I never had this problem.

My External Hard drive goes to sleep for no reason. Hi, I have two Lacie Hard drives thunderbolt 1 (Lacie BIG + Lacie d2) connected through daisy chain. I used to work these drives with a Mac Pro 2014 until a couple of months ago. Things were Preety straight forward - going to energy settings I just had to uncheck the "put the hard drives to sleep when possible" and the hard drives never sleeps. Now I got a new MacBook 16, and obviously using an Apple thunderbolt 1 to thunderbolt 3 adapter to connect my hard drives. So again, settings are correct - "Put hard drives to speed when possible" unchecked. But one of the two drives (the Lacie BIG - which is the one connected to computer) keeps sleeping. Anybody has a similar problem?? Many thanks in advance

I find that normally when closing the lid with an external USB drive connected that the external drive is powered down prior to when power is disabled for the port. This is all handled internally. When the lid is opened and the computer is awakened the external drive is simply auto-mounted as the port becomes active.

Energy Saver preferences has an option to put drives to sleep when idle but that does not affect what you are describing.
