Question: How to Defrag MacBook

Hello all,

I have a MacBook pro and I've noticed that it has slowed down quite a bit. Is a defrag recommended? If so, I am guessing I need a outside vendors software and if that is the case, does anyone have any recommendations? Or, does anyone have any suggestions for what I can attempt without the defrag to attempt to clean up my MacBook?

Thanks in advance!

Question marked as Solved

you are quite right, the etrecheck report says "not upgradable" and those have been very accurate.

No. There is no practical reason to defrag a disk drive in a Mac.

Instead, I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Files over a certain small size are defragmented when opened. There is no accumulation of a great many fragmented files, so no Big Show of defragmentation or third-party software is needed.

But if your Mac is getting slow, running etrecheck will often uncover why it is getting slow.

You do not appear to have enough real RAM memory for all the things you are choosing to run simultaneously.

Virtual Memory Information:

Available RAM 1.50 GB
Free RAM 24 MB
Used RAM 6.50 GB
Cached files 1.48 GB
Swap Used 1020 MB

any substantial "swap used" indicates that additional needed RAM is being simulated on Disk, which is always slower than real RAM.

You could consider adding more real RAM, or reducing some of you User Login Items that launch when you log in and stay resident. If you take them off that list, they will only launch when needed.

You appear to have several items that may "phone home" across the Internet and use system resources to do so. If you do not need constant access to those, it will be less resource intensive to launch only when needed.
