Apple iMessage plan to support non-iPhone devices?

I have a lot of friends and family that like to text in groups, and while most of us are on iPhones, there are some people who aren't using them. Is there any plan to support these devices with iMessages in the future? The whole thing is driving me to want to switch to Android.
