Why are recipients not in alphabetical (or any other) order?

I've seen a version of this question posed by GenipGirl, but I've seen no answer.
Here are my questions:
In my Address Book, the names are all in order, alphabetized by their first name. However, when I select the group for the To: box, the names just appear in random order. What's up?
How do I get Mail to list the names in the "To" box in the order I prefer?

Thanks for all the responses. Andrew Wilson's method works. That is, I click on the Address button on the particular message's Tool Bar and select all the desired names in a particular group and drag them to the TO: line of the message. The group's order is preserved. Yes, it is a few extra steps, and it is preferred that the group's order be preserved even when I just type the group name into the TO: line. However, the extra steps are not onerous.
Thanks, again.
