Itunes not responding.

I have tried many things including looking at other responses, restarting my mac, going on a new account and a new library but I can't even continue on a new account or library because as soon as it is opened the rainbow "wheel of death" appears and I have to force quit itunes. I even updated my mac to the furthest update. Any ideas?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), It is a 4 year old Macbook.
