Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

My iTunes Media Folder has many more songs than i see in iTunes I have tried File>Library>Orgniase Library>Consolidate files but this hasn't worked. What else should I try?

My iTunes Media Folder Location is correct (F:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music)

but this folder has many more songs than i see in iTunes.

I have tried File>Library>Organise Library>Consolidate files but this hasn't worked.

I have the latest version of iTunes?

What else should I try? Uninstall and reinstall iTunes?

Thanks

Julia

Ideally your media folder should be set to F:\iTunes\iTunes Media, and your active database file should be F:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.

If you reset the media folder to the correct path and iTunes moves artist folders out of the Music subfolder up one level into the iTunes Media folder then use File > Library > Organize > Library > Rearrange Files.

You can use File > Add Folder to Library to add the contents of the iTunes Media folder to the library which will add in any files that iTunes doesn't already know about.

It is possible that some of the imported files will be duplicates of things that are in your library already. Here is my advice on removing duplicates:

iTunes may create duplicates if the same content is repeatedly added from outside the media folder when it is set to make copies of anything that is added to the library, or is added from an external drive that hosts the media folder that was offline when iTunes was launched.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break any others.

Start in the Songs view. Use View > Show Duplicate Items (pre iTunes 12.4) or File > Library > Show Duplicate Items (post 12.4) and then click Same Album to display exact duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

Use my DeDuper script (Windows only) if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background on the script, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to, and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

See Make a split library portable for some general background on library structure.

I'm guessing you intended to include an image which isn't here.

Which .itl file was most recently modified?

You can reset the media folder using Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Reset, which will work if the active file is the one in F:\iTunes, otherwise you can use the Change button and select the folder F:\iTunes\iTunes Media.

Step 2 was an if, but I don't think iTunes will move anything by itself at the point. I think I just confused by a comment in another thread.

After changing the media folder use File > Library > Organzie Library > Rearrange Files unless the option is greyed out. This ensures the library will be using the new layout from now on if it was in the old one.

Then go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn Keep organized... off. click OK, then go back and turn it on again. This should restructure the media folder if anything is currently in the wrong place relative to the media folder.

If the active set of library files are the deeply nested set then copy then move the ones in F:\iTunes out of the way, e.g. to F:\Temp, the copy the nested set into F:\iTunes and shift start iTunes to connect to them. Move the now redundant deep ...\Music\Music folder out of the way too.

Thanks for so much your prompt response.

Can I check the following interpretation (plus a few more questions) ......

Step 1 "reset the media folder to the correct path"

Please can you confirm the steps I follow to do this?

Step 2 - iTunes then moves artist folders out of the Music subfolder up one level into the iTunes Media"

Do I need to take any action for this to happen, or will it happen automatically?

Step 3 - use File > Library > Organize > Library > Rearrange Files.

Step 4 - active database file should be F:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.

I currently have the following iTunes Database Files:

- 3 in F:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Music (plus a Library Extras and Library Genius!) see attached itunes

- 1 in F:\iTunes (plus a Library Extras and Library Genius!) see attached itunes 2

- 2 in F:\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries

Not sure how I ended up with all these!? Do I keep the 1 in F:\iTunes and delete the others?

Step 5 - use File > Add Folder to Library to add the contents of the iTunes Media folder to the library which will add in any files that iTunes doesn't already know about.

Thanks in advance

Thanks again.

All my artist folders (142GB) are now in F:\iTunes\iTunes Media - I've moved all other music to another drive.

I kept the newest iTunes Library which was in F:\iTunes - I've moved all other iTunes Database Files to another drive.

I've checked via Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Reset that the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to F:\iTunes\iTunes Media.

I've tried File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange Files but the option is greyed out.

Please can you advise why this and what I should do next?

Many thanks

Hi TT2

I've now done Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn Keep organized... off, click OK, then go back and turn it on again.

and done the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes .

I've again tried File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange Files but the option is still greyed out.

Songs from my media folder are still not in iTunes.

Please can you advise what else I can try? Unistall and reinstall?

Many thanks

Julia
