The current photo app does not support RAW photos (NEF) from my D500 Nikon camera. when will they update the app?

RAW support is not at the application level but at the OS level and the current OS High Sierra 10.13.3 (and Photos 3.0 which is part of the OS) does support the Nikon D500 RAW L format only - Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

Nikon D500 RAW files have been supported since Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 6.19, that came out with El Capitan.
This RAW Support cannot be used with iPhoto and Aperture, only with Photos for Mac on MacOS X 10.11.x El Capitan or newer.
Your Profile Signature is stating iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.6). Even if iPhoto 9.6.q is still running on macOS 10.13, you cannot use the D500 RAW in iPhoto, only in Photos or other applications, that are fully compatible with the newer versions of MacOS X.
