AppleTV 4K - no native YouTube 4K?

I picked up an AppleTV 4K to replace my 4th gen AppleTV and finally gave my 4k HDR TV what it deserves.

Everything has been great other than finding out that the YouTube app only plays HD (1080) videos and upscales them to UHD (4K)! I've been using my TVs YouTube app to view tons of 4K content (in HDR no less) and it looks fantastic! The AppleTV 4K YouTube app doesn't even come close to matching the quality.

What's the deal? Will the YouTube app ever support native 4K HDR content?

I've read that all 4K content on YouTube uses Google's VP9 codec; a codec not supported by Apple hardware. Is this the reason? And does this mean we will never see this support?
