Why apple do not support 4k resolution on youtube app , on apple 4k tv . Come on we pay to have 4K not 1080p max . its not reasonable not to support latest google codec for 4k ... when we will see finally support for 4K playback ?
apple don't develop the youtube app google develop their own app and host it in app store
the issue is that youtube rely on an codec which the appletv's arm based cpu does not support hardware decoding for

or if apple begin making cpus for ios devices which support hardware encoding

Apple TV supports HEVC (H.265) video codec for 4K content, and Apple asks that from all its content providers.
Google uses the VP9 video codec for 4K content on YouTube exclusively, and won’t add HEVC (H.265) versions.
Neither seems to be willing to give in.
There is hope in the next generation video codec, AV1, wherein both are Alliance members. Apple hasn’t announced yet when they intend to offer AV1 support in their products.
