New macbook pro shutdown when I close the lid, only starts with SMC reset

Just got a brand new macbook pro touch bar 13''.

Before I installed anything, it was already faulty:

After closing the lid, even for just a few seconds, the macbook shuts down.

After opening, keyboard and touch bar remain dark. Pressing the power button has no effect.

I realized it would only start up with a SMC reset.

So everytime I close the lid, I have to reset the SMC and start up.

I tried to reset the NVRAM too, but no effect. I ran a test (pressing D on startup) twice, and it found no problems.

From the log, the shutdown cause is number 0: which apparently means "power disconnected".

Therefore I suspect a material problem, either battery or motherboard.

I've been googling the issue up and down without finding a solution.

Any ideas before I bring it in?

Thanks!
