I have tried multiple times to update from 10.9.5 to High Sierra. This is what shows on the log after about 20 hours of updating - or at least a show of very gradual movement on the blue bar:
I think this is the applicable bit. What does "Target is not convertible to APFS: This volume is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."

That looks correct. I suggest you run First Aid then try updating again. Check to be sure you have the High Sierra full installer which is a 5GB file. If not, then redownload the correctly sized file from the App Store.

It means that your disk drive is improperly formatted. Open Disk Utility and check to be sure the partition scheme is GUID and the Format type is Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
If you have good backups, try erasing the drive and reformatting it again. Also run Disk Utility/Repair Disk until you get no errors. Then try to reinstall.
I have my files backed up. Do I need to back up applications too? Or anything else? Thank you.
