Siri - Homepod in distance preferenced over iphone nearby and can't hear

Scenario: I have a homepod in my living room and iPhone on nightstand in bedroom. When in bed and asking Siri to turn off the lights the iPhone no longer responses but the homepod activates. As it's at a distance in a different room it doesn't hear me (and I can't hear it). I thought there was 'intelligence' in the platform to pick the closest device to use for Siri? (Pre homepod the iPhone worked a treat). Anyone got ideas on what can be done or workarounds? thanks 😉
