MacBook Pro very slow but CPU running normal

This is the problem:
My mac is running very slow lately. It is most annoying when writing text in emails, chats or Word. Beachballs comes up very often, switching between programms might also take some time. Sometimes hot coners need a very long time to react.

My CPU is not busy at all. Most of the times Activity Monitor says it 70-90% idle.

Same for Memory:

About my mac:
MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2011), El Capitan 10.11.6, Processor: 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Startup Disk: SSD Samsung 500GB
For more see the detailed EtreCheck report below

What I have already done

  • Removed data from my hard disks. I have one SSD on which the system is on and one HDD for my data. The SSD has around 20% free now.
  • Did the hardware test: Everythings is fine.
  • Reset SMC and NVRAM / PRAM
  • Cleaned my desktop
  • Did run Disk Utility's First Aid
  • Replaced my battery with a new one. The old was on "Replace Soon"
  • Did run the EtreCheck (report below)

What I am thinking of doing next:

  • Upgrade to High Sierra even though I am not sure if this could at all
  • Reinstalling my OS from scratch

Any idea why my mac is so slow? What could make sense to do?

Here is my EtreCheck report:
(I have two things explained about this below the report)

EtreCheck version: 4.1 (4A162)

Report generated: 2018-03-06 14:14:45

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 5:42

Performance: Below Average

Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

Its most annoying when i write it appears delayed. Also switching between programs takes longer than usually.

Interestingly I could stream and watch HD videos in my browser without a problem.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Adware - Adware detected.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. It appears to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Low performance - EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

Please note:

Even though the EtreCheck reports says that it detected Adware on my system I don't see anything on my Activity Monitor using a lot of CPU or Memory. So I don't think this could cause my mac slowing down. Still trying to get that Adware off my system with anti virus software. Working on that.

Also I find it strange that EtreCheck gives a different size of free space (114 GB) on my HDD (disk2s2). According to Finder on my HDD should be 302 GB of free space and Disk Inventory X says there should be 281 GB free. Is that normal?

Ok, uninstalled Avira.

I dont know how to delete the adware with Etrecheck. On the Major Issues page it only allows me to click on "review" which brings me to Security tab of the program. There is doesnt mention the adware. (I can't take screenshots in Etrecheck)

How can I delete the adware with Etrecheck?

I just installed Malwarebytes because people recomending this here. The scan says: "you are clean!". Quarantine folder is empty. Dont get it.

Also things are getting worse. Several times now my mac was not responding at all, freezed. Just now it could only restart after the second try. This is really not good.

Mar 7, 2018 5:35 AM in response to beautification

If this were happening to me I would run Etrecheck again to see if all that anti virus type stuff was in fact successfully uninstalled. You have a lot of third party stuff installed. Some of it might be causing your problems. You can try starting up in Safe Mode to see how your computer runs without it. Note that safe mode disables a lot of stuff so your computer won't run normally in all respects while in safe mode.

Mar 7, 2018 6:21 AM in response to CT

I started up in safe mode. Everything is pretty slow as it was without safe mode. It is even slower in safe mode. I had flickering black bars appearing when the desktop started, slow hot corners, typing delayed, beachball.
But isnt safe mode always a bit slow? So hard to say how my runs it. Havent started in safe mode before so cant copare.

How will I see in Etrecheck whether anti virus was successfully uninstalled? (I used AppCleaner for uninstalling)

What kind of third party stuff do you mean? How to get rif of it?

Malwarebytes will only help if the problem is due to malware or other threats. That's one of the least common causes for performance problems, though, and on a quick look through your EtreCheck report, I didn't see anything that looked malicious.

Yes, good guess! My non-SSD drive is failing. I did a SMART test and it came up with 58 errors while the SSD passed.

The guy in the shop running the test said the slowing down is because of the failing drive even though there is only data stored on it. He unplugged the HDD from the mainboard an restarted the computer and it seems to run fine. So he might be right.

I am currently copying the data from the failing disk and will replace the HDD after that. If the problem will be gone I will update this thread here.

Here is the software to run the SMART test:
