I have to presume you mean the "Frequently used" emojis at the bottom left when selecting an emoji.

Whether you mean there (where it shows the last skin color you used for a particular emoji), or scrolling right to get back to the default orange one of the same emoji, just tap and hold on the emoji and slide-select the color skin you want. You're never forced to use the last one you happened to select.

In text messages you’re allowed to choose a skintone/hair color for certain emojis. But once you select one, you don’t get the choice again.

Okay, that's much more clear, and is likely what Cvg714238 meant. You want to change the skin color of an emoji used in a message that has already been sent.

No, you can't do that. Sent is sent. You can't change the emoji used any more than you can fix a misspelled word. Kind of like dropping a letter into a mailbox. You can't retrieve it to make a change. The recipient will get whatever you sent.

Nowhere in your initial post did you say one thing about your iPhone, which isn't the only place emojis exist. No one else has added their thoughts for the same reason. No context to make a suggestion.

But now that we know, where are you referring to? I can enter Settings and tap on the top menu choice for my Apple ID. There's an image (on mine) of a snowflake with an Edit button at the bottom of the circular image, but all you can replace it with is another photo of some kind.

I don't see anywhere to assign an emoji as an avatar. But then, neither did I look that hard.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve obviously not been through in my question.

I am referring to the menu of emojis that are in messages. You know, thumbs up, praying hands, peace sign, etc. I accidentally selected the default for the dark brown skin color and now I can’t change it. THAT’S where the emoji issue is.

Actually I meant for future messages. Once you choose a skin tone or hair color you don’t have the ability to make a choice on future messages. I’m looking for a way to change what I selected for future messages. For example, the emoji of a woman and man show they are both blond and I want them to be brunette. Once I chose blond the first time I don't have the ability to choose anymore.

Thank you

You change the emoji for your next use the same way as always. Tap and hold on the emoji so the skin color choices expand. Select the one you want. I tapped and held on one just now that was in my frequently used panel. It allowed me to change the skin color the same as it does in the normal Smileys & People section. At no point are you "stuck" with the last skin color used for any given emoji.
