Pops/Clicks in audio when using iPhone X with an external Lightning DAC
(Disclaimer: I found a similar thread but I had to start a new one, as the previous thread is outdated, as the Apple communities website tells me: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7685241)
Have you experienced pops/clicks in audio when using any iPhone with an external Lightning DAC? I have.
I had been using the following combo for a while and it worked flawlessly until the end of 2017:
iPhone SE + Lightning to USB Camera Adapter + AudioQuest DragonFly Red = flawless
By the turn of the year, I changed my phone to iPhone X, and it has been giving me pops/clicks randomly. I read somewhere on the Internet that a 'Lightning to USB3' would help, so I tried. I does not give me pops/clicks but the sound stops coming for random 1/4 or 1/2 sec silence although the music keeps playing.
iPhone X + Lightning to USB Camera Adapter + AudioQuest DragonFly Red = pops/clicks
iPhone X + Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter + AudioQuest DragonFly Red = random silence with music going
I went back to iPhone SE, it works flawlessly, I tested it with iPad Pro, and it works flawlessly. It seems to be a hardware problem of some sort, combined with the recent OS updated – maybe specific to iPhone models.
iPad Pro + Lightning to USB Camera Adapter + AudioQuest DragonFly Red + an in-ear headphone = flawless
I also have tried the following combination, and it had produced a flawless result:
iPhone X + Lightning to USB Camera Adapter + Chord Hugo = flawless
iPhone X + Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter + Chord Hugo = flawless
Chord Hugo has its own battery (and perhaps current stabilising and/or electric noise filter), so that might be that. Or, it could also be the voltage output of the Lightening of certain iPhone models.
Please share your experiences/experiment results.
