Connecting Apple TV to Older Projector

I am looking to set up a new Apple TV in a classroom with an older projector that only has VGA capabilities. I recently purchased an HDMI to VGA adapter to connect the ATV to the projector but received no signal. Is it possible to connect the ATV to the projector with an HDMI to VGA cable? What kind of cable/adapter should I purchase and even if I am able to connect successfully, will the connection cause HDCP errors playing through an older projector? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
