iMac 5K 2017 : Slow Startup

My iMac 5K 2017 has very slow startup when i connected my USB3.0 HDD (Time Machine). Once i remove it and rebooted, it worked like a blaze. I have no idea how to solve this. Is there a way to circumvent it? I still need the HDD to be connected for TM purposes.

slow boot up with USB SSD connected an SSD 256 GB (APFS) via USB 3.0 to my mac pro (late 2013, macos 10.14.5). now booting up got terribly slow, sometimes it does not work at all. removing the drive on startup solves the problem. interestingly, there is another USB drive connected which works fine. it is a 4 TB HD (macos extended journaled) for time machine. i do not understand why a drive should slow down startup - i mean, the startup drive is defined, so there is actually no point for searching anything before booting up. any ideas how to speed up the process? thank you!

Time Machine external SSD not showing on startup on 24" iMac I recently bought and use a Netac Slim 1TB SSD as a Time Machine backup for my new 24" iMac. My iMac is up to date- every time I start my iMac the SSD shows on desktop but not on the 3rd (usually) day?? I need to reconnect for it to appear. I've tried many things all to no avail with the same issue on 3rd day. I used the supplied USB to USB-C cable, an apple USB-C charge cable, both connected to the USB3 & USB4 port but each time it still persists. Does anyone know how to fix this? I format it under AFPS (case sensitive). Is it the drive? Thanks in advance
