Safari is slow....ly killing me

Safari is slow recently only when I have another application running. I have the MacBook Air 8GB 1600mHz memory 1.6 GHz processor Any ideas?..... is it because I am on OS Sierra 10.12.6 ? Of course I did not get the apple care. I am a computer neophyte so be gentle
