ITunes iPhone backup passowrd

I am attempting to backup my iPhone via iTunes. Under the 'Backups' page the prompt for 'Encrypt iPhone backup' is already checked. When I try to uncheck it I am asked for a password to unlock it. If I click on 'Change password' I am asked for a password to change it.

I never entered a password in iTunes so how do I know what password to use? I have tried my iPhone passcode and my Apple id password - nothing works.

How do I get by this step?

On another topic I want to backup and then restore my phone because all my photos have disappeared. I know they are still on the phone because they are taking up storage space so I'm hoping I can see them again if I restore a backup.

iPhone 6, iOS 10.2.1

If you get prompted for a password, you, or someone on your behalf did indeed enter a password (twice) previously.

Please see this long discussion for some excellent suggestions ...

Where is this password stored? This is a new computer and I just installed iTunes so where is it looking for a password?

I have backed up this phone on another laptop but that one died. So with a clean computer and new iTunes where is it looking for the password? Is it in the phone memory somewhere?

I'll try some old passwords.

Thanks - I was able to get it unlocked after trying about a dozen old passwords.

So now to my other question about disappearing photos. After backing up my phone in iTunes, I am showing about 2 G under 'Documents & Data' and 4G of 'Other'. I'm thinking my photos are still there in that 4G of other however I can only see 4 photos where I had about 600 on the phone that disappeared.

If I restore the backup will the photos reappear?

I want to transfer the photos off my phone to open up storage space but can't do that until I can see them. Any suggestions?

Yes, the password is stored on your device. That's how it knows there is one.

Otherwise the security could be compromised by using a new computer.
