can't update my ID and password for App store.

The App store has an old ID for me. I've changed my ID and password on my MacBook pro but cannot get it changed for the App store. I followed instructions to go to the App Store >sign out, then clicked Sign in and entered my new ID and password. I got a message that either my ID or password were incorrect. What do I do now?
