If I upgrade from a low cost subscription plan to a plan with higher price in the middle of the bill cycle, do I get a refund back, or do I get to pay less amount for the new higher subscription depending on how much money worth time is remaining on the remaining time of the billing cycle of old subscription?

Is there not any information on the developer's website and/or have you contacted them ? It may be that the upgrade takes into account what you've already bought and adjusts the first payment accordingly, or that you are charged the full amount and there is no refund.
Neither, the new subscription is likely to start after the current subscription period ends
The subscription starts immediately when upgrading, that I'm pretty sure about.
But I'm not really sure about how is the refund handled.
