open microsoft office file renamed to smbdelete...

Recently, there was a known issue where large numbers of smbdelete files were created when accessing office files over a network. A recent MacOS update fixed that, but now when a file that is already opened is accessed over the network, the user who originally had the document open gets the message "Additional permissions are required to access the following files" and the document is renamed .smbdelete..........User uploaded file

The normal behavior would be for the second person opening the document to only be able to open it as read only. This no longer happens. All office software has recent updates and MacOS is up to date.

Any ideas?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), null
