Apple ID registration

Hi! I am hoping someone can help me....

A previous employer has got in touch (I left them nearly 18 months ago) to advise my apple ID is registered to their work iPad and they cannot reset it to factory settings without an authorisation code from me.

I don’t feel happy giving them any codes and passwords and I have checked my account to see what devices my Apple ID is registered to and the only Devices I have on there are my own iPad and my iMac.

Can anyone advise? i don’t understand how my Apple ID could be registered and it not be on my list? Can I remotely remove it as I’m not happy giving my details.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

I did not "accuse you" of anything, Caroline.
I am referring to setting up a "passCODE" to prevent just anyone from picking up the iPad and waking it up. It is a security measure similar the new-ish TouchID (fingerprint) and the brand-new FaceID on the iPhoneX

This has nothing to do with your AppleID - it is entirely "local" to the device (stored ON it)

When you were "issued" the iPad by the company, they should have foreseen the day that they would replace the iPad for you OR the day that you would leave their employ

When you got the iPad, what instructions did they give you on setting it up?

A company that deploys iDevices has methods and means provided by Apple = see Device Enrollment Program section of Business - Products and Platforms - Apple

At bottom, you agree that they own the iPad and they are telling you that they are being foiled in their attempt to erase it. They may need to Contact Apple Support and still possibly need your help.

Would you be more comfortable hearing from Apple Support? (we are user volunteers, so we can only offer advice)

You probably never fully logged out of the work device. I'm not sure what code they're asking you for whether that has to do with iCloud Keychain or Two-factor authentication.

If you never fully logged out of the device, then it's possible it has an Activation Lock. However, if they may know your work ID and password, then most likely the code they're referring to could be from two-factor authentication.

But if my Apple ID isn’t registered to the device, I don’t understand why they would need it as my Apple ID shouldn’t have anything to do with it?

They are are asking for an authorisation code but in doing this, they will be logged in to my Apple ID on the iPad meaning they can have access to my icloud as well as my personal iPad and iMac.

but I still don’t understand why, when my ID is not registered to the iPad, they need my information to reset it?

Thanks so much!

I didn’t set up their iPad with my details! At No point did I say I had. And it’s not the passcode that is the problem as they will have been using that iPad for 18 months! This is the first that I have heard that there is a problem. They are advising that they can not reset the password to factory settings without my password and my confusion is that my ID isn’t regostered to any other iPad so I don’t know why this would be the case.

I understand this is difficult and that is why I am here trying to come up with a solution. Rather than just ignoring them. Your post isn’t particularly helpful in resolving this and I don’t really appreocate being accused of doing something I haven’t done.

If you have any suggestions as to how I can get this sorted (the point of these forums...to help people) I’m all ears but if not, please Keep unkind and accusing comments to yourself.

Thank you.

Just to add a little to friend CCC's post. It may be that you used the same passcode for their machine and yours. If that is the case, you will need to change the passcode on your machine ... and afterwards you can pass on your old passcode to them safely.

When you were working there you had no reason to think you may be leaving so using the same code for both machines seemed okay. But things change and if you did not part company on the best of terms this may need someone giving way. Perhaps yourself?

sorry, Im not sure if I am missunderstanding but this isn’t to do with the passcode.

they have been been using the iPad for 18 months, they have gone to reset it and it is asking for my apple ID password which is the one I use to purchase items in the Apple store.

The only reason it would ask for this is if my Apple ID was registered to that iPad, but it is Not. So I’m confused as to why they need it? And if I give it to them, they will have access to everything. If I give them the verification code, they will also have access to everything.

And It’s worth noting that at no point did I register my Apple ID on that iPad. i would never do that as it’s private.

Thanks!
