You have not said what version of Pages you are talking about, but say you are using Mac OSX 10.6.7.
In Pages '09 you can import Styles from other Pages '09 documents or Word documents, even selecting some or all of the Styles.
Pages 5 & 6 are vastly improved so you can do none of that, along with a very long list of other useful things you can not do.
As Barry says you have to create a template and use that as your starting point, shooting blind as to the Styles within that document.

Create the style in a new document.
Save the document as a Template.
Use that template for other documents in which you want that style available.
