Welcome!

Actually a "4MOT" code is a fan motor failure, in your case, in the fan that cools the hard drive. A failed/failing hard drive would return a code starting with "4HDD."

Before we can advise how to proceed, we need to know what iMac sub-model you have. They celebrate their 20th birthday this year and were made in four broad families, each with different troubleshooting procedures. On some replacing a hard drive fan is an easy job; on others you need a pro.

If the computer works and is running OS Leopard or Snow Leopard, do "About the Mac.." from your Apple menu to get this window (ignore the red arrows for now)

Note I've indicated with a red arrow a line containing an alpha-numerical code, in the example, "iMac11,3." Please tell us the entire code that your computer reports. If your iMac was made before 2006, the code will start with "PowerMac" instead of "iMac."

Also please tell us what was going on that prompted you to run Apple Hardware Test. There may be clues there that can help us help you. Example: on some intel-based iMacs, upgrading the hard drive and failing to install a proper accessory cable can cause the fan not to communicate with the drive and you get an error.

I wasn't finished, the system serial # is W8*****X85, SMC version is 1 .2OF4. The computer would not boot up any further than the prohibit symbol. Thanks.
