Preview deletes highlights in some of the pdf's since I installed OS High Sierra. How can I fix it?

So some of the pdf only saves the most recent highlights and annotations and deletes the older ones. It is like the new highlights overwrite the older ones.

I lost all my notes on one file when I opened it after some time and highlighted some new text. After saving, and reopening only the most recent highlight was saved. Rest all were deleted.

How can I fix this?

Thanks for the reply. I am only using preview, nothing else.

See for some pdf's it is working fine. But for some as soon as I save the new highlights, the older ones get deleted. Whats more is that if new highlight and old highlight are on the same page they won't get deleted.

For example, if in a pdf document, pages 1,2,3 have older saved highlights and I make new highlights on pages 3,4 and save. When I reopen the highlights on pages 1,2 have gone. However, the old and new highlights of page 3 remain 😮 This is boggling me. It is happening with some pdf files only. Now further if I make newer highlights on page 5, save and reopen. All are removed except page 5 where I had highlighted most recently.

Can this be related to copyright/ read-write privileges by authors of pdf? Or is it a bug?

If you are doing annotations in Preview, it is autosaving these in the PDF as you apply them. In my experience, including with High Sierra, annotations are not lost from a PDF that is exclusively used in Preview — unless you manually remove them.

However, if you are applying annotations in Adobe Reader DC, or via Acrobat Pro DC, some of these will not appear, or appear differently in Apple's Preview — due to lesser PDF functionality support in Preview.
