Thunderbolt > HDMI fails "No signal"

I just bought an after market cable with a HDMI in one end and a Thunderbolt in the other to connect my iMac (late 2013) to my Samsung TV. But when i connect the two it just says "no signal" on the TV. I have tried both Thunderbolt-ports on my iMac and all HDMI-ports on my TV with the same result. Also i don't get the "arrangements" option in my displays settings tab.

When i have the two devices connected and then turn on the TV the screen on my iMac starts flashing, as if it is trying to connect but fails, but no error message shows up. After a little bit of trying i touched the HDMI end in the TV and noticed that it was VERY hot so i immediately unplugged it. What is wrong here?
