Question: Apple TV 4K + MacBook Pro 4K HDR Airplay

Hi All,

I am considering getting a MacBook Pro but I wondered whether it is possible to mirror the MacBook when playing 4K HDR content. I’m aware you cannot download 4K files from the iTunes Store but what about 4K content already stored.

Also apple tv doesn’t support YouTube 4K, is it possible to view it on the MacBook and mirror it to the Apple TV with a 4K output?

Cheers

Nick

4K content could be streamed through LAN iTunes access or AirPlay, but I would advice against the screen mirroring. Mirroring transfers decoded video at screen resolution, while the semi-streaming options let the Apple TV decode the transfer at source file resolution.

Safari on macOS maxes out on YouTube 1440p. You can’t AirPlay higher resolutions from there. The issue is the VP9 codec used with 4K (and 8K). Screen mirroring with a different browser (Chrome) would have the same issues as mentioned.

I haven’t been able to find if the mirroring is uncompressed or re-compressed on the fly. Either way the quality suffers with screen mirroring and motion (flicker, stutter).
