Finder dissapeared from top tab

Product is iMac, macOS High Sierra v.10.13.3


Problem.

Finder tab disappeared from the top and a grey colour covers half the screen and disables:

* side by side split screen,

* mission control to separate screens and

* when in full screen cannot find buttons to exit and esc doesn’t work to bring in the dock,

* plus of course all the Finder functions aren’t available.


What I tried unsuccessfully so far.

Force quit Applications to relaunch Finder

Cut power & restart.


Can someone please help me restore Finder tab and eliminate the grey screen?
