The state of Pages 5 & 6 documents are not saved with the document, unlike Pages '09 and earlier.

The Sidebar is a screen space wasting fixture in Pages 5 and 6.

This genius of a "contextual" design is particularly a nuisance with just one, let alone multiple windows open, on laptops with smaller screens. An example of the design that isn't by Apple in the last 5 years.

We used to be blessed with beautiful functionality in macOS now all we get is prettified fashion, constantly churned by a new batch of designers, most who do not seem to know what they are doing, or never use Mac Apps, let alone the ones they cripple, because somebody wants to leave their own mark on Mac Software. Just the mark, they never finish or fix what they start

You can not get rid of the Pages 5 & 6 Sidebar. Opening it from an email is irrelevant.

If I'm reading your statement correctly, you are emailing this as a Pages document, which is then opened by the recipient in Pages. Display of the sidebar is controlled by the application opening the document, if it's opened in Pages, then it is possible for the sidebar to be shown.

If you do not want the recipient to be able to see the sidebar, "Print" the document as a PDF file, and email that. The resulting PDF document will be opened by Preview, Adobe reader, or other PDF reader application not capable of opening the sidebar.

Procedure:

With the finished version of the Pages document open:

• Press command-P to open the Print dialogue.
• Click the PDF button at lower left of the dialogue window

  Choose 'email PDF' from the menu that opens

A new email document will open with the PDF file included as an attachment.

(To view the PDF, double click the attachment, which will launch Preview and display the document.)

Address the email, add any message to accompany the attachment, and send.

The sidebar is not part of the document.

It is part of the application—used to view and control various attributes/settings of the document.

That said, the state of the sidebar is an attribute of the document, and that attribute should have been saved with the file, and should not have changed when the saved document was emailed. A quick test with a short Pages document sent by email from me to me using the Share button opened with the sidebar in the same state (closed) as when sent.

The test used Pages 5.6.2. A different version might give a different result, which is why it's important to include version numbers of both Pages (Pages menu > About Pages) and the operating system (Apple menu > About this Mac) when posting questions in this community.

Hi Peter,

And yet, this emailed Pages 5.6.2 document, Shared via email while it' Format sidebar was closed, opened from the received email with the sidebar closed.

The active Pages document had its Format side bar open when I wen to Mail to open this attached document (by double clicking in the email).

My apologies you CAN close the Format sidebar, when I tried it I merely switched from Document to Format.

AND Pages 6.3 DOES now remember its state, including screen position, zoom, and whether the Format Sidebar is closed. But NOT what page you were on.

Previously it remembered nothing so this is new.
