Stalled message move in MacOS10.13

I have an iMac about 4 years old running macOS10.13.3 (High Sierra) and Mail11.2. Since (and only since) I installed High Sierra, moving messages from the InBox to folders I have set up stops working some time (variable) after opening Mail. The only solution I have so far is to close Mail and then reopen it. This may (or not) be associated with an intermittent downloading of 1000's of mail messages of some undefined provenance, which may be slowing or stopping the move message operation. Finally, Mail makes many (sometimes dozens) of copies of draft messages and keeps them after the messages are sent, but this behavior started a few OS versions ago and is not specific to High Sierra. All my mail comes to Mail via Gmail but I have my own domain name.

Hmm, a couple of problems. I like to adress your first behaviour of moving mails from your inbox to some other local boxes.

Mail has a very badly behaviour in showing what it does. For example: If you move a lot (like thousands of mails from your inbox-imap-account to a local box or even between your online boxes.... – Wait. It will take ages, depends on your internet connection etc. Just give the mac the time and maybe check that the machine is not going to sleep in between, it works.

No, not thousands, not even hundreds of messages, just a few at a time as part of my practice of moving as I receive them messages I particularly want to keep into folders (some in IMAP Gmail and some in On My Mac). Most messages are deleted soon after receipt, though some are kept indefinitely in my Inbox, which unfortunately houses many, many messages from the days some years back when I did not delete very often.

Can it be that on one your boxes is corrupt. Have you tried to import the content of your or these boxes ( all in: /User/Library/Mail) in a new and fresh useraccount? What happens there.

I Just moved last week around 80.000 emails, dating back to 2009 (from one account) into a new machine. It took ages: 6 hours for 150 Gigabyte of data but It just worked. And this is only accomplished via direct import, like what a timemachine restore does to.
