You might have other options such as an Apple Authorized Service Center. The only caveat is that they might not have the part in stock, and the prices may depend on their own labor rates. If you're in the United States you can start here:

The other thing is when I tried going to an Apple Store without an appointment, I was told that I couldn't get service that day. However, I was told that I could come in when they opened the next morning and get placed on a waiting list for walk-in service that day.

You can wait, or try to find another Apple store who can fit you in sooner. Or you can go to an Apple store and just wait in the hope that someone with an appointment won't show.
