Question: Photos editing performance

I have been using a 2011 Mac book Pro and running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.3. I have been using iPhoto to edit my photographs and I was pleased with the programs efficiency. However since the transition to Photos in one of the updates a couple months ago I have found that the new program is extremely slow and clunky. Is this a common problem and is there a fix or troubleshooting procedure that would enhance the program and make it more efficient?

There are many posts about this and there is no definitive solution - some people have found that 10.13.3 helps or resolves the issue, others like you do not find that - users have reported that conversations with Apple Support indicate that engineering is working on a complete solution and that it will be released with some future update in which case staying up to date is the only solution

What specific issue are you having? The biggest complains have seemed to be with retouching

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply; retouching, enhancing and overall editing of individual photographs is specifically the problem. the program responds slowly to the sliders and commonly locks up for periods of time before the intended edits are completed. This condition frankly make the Photos program unusable.

You only recently migrated to Photos, right? And is your library large?

Directly after the migration Photos is very busy with preparing the library. For several days the background processes will be running and making your Mac slow and unresponsive. But that should settle down after a while and get better. Try to keep the Mac running with photos minimized in the Dock.
