1st gen ipod touch usb not recognised windows 10

My son found my old ipod touch (1st gen) and now we're trying to reset it.

Currently it says 'Disabled connect to iTunes', so I opened iTunes (checked and it's the latest version at time of posting) on my Windows 10 laptop and connected it via USB almost immediately it popped up with 'USB device not recognised'.

I looked online for a fix and everything said about holding buttons for awhile and I tried that, nothing appears on the screen accept the USB error. I've tried changing cables (which work on my daughters ipad fine) and even moved to my daughters windows 10 laptop. Nothing else has popped on the screen and every econd time I hold in the buttons the ipod shows the 'iTunes' logo with a USB cable like when you first buy it but the laptop still doesn't recognise it.

Of course as a result of it not being recognised it is no longer charging.

Anyone know how to fix this?
