I cannot reset face id in iphone x. When I click on the get stared button it says move iphone little higher or little down but nothing happens. Pls help.

Face ID not available iPhone 12 Pro Max Face ID quit working so I reset it. Tried to set it up again but it continually tells me to move the iPhone higher then lower and repeats. Finally says Face ID is not available. Any hints on how to fix?
