iTunes crashes when Media Kind is changed to Audiobook

I import mp3 audiobook files into iTunes 12.7.3.

They are imported as songs in Music.

I then go to the "Get Info" for one or more of the files and then to Options.

Under Options I change the "Media Kind" from "Music" to "Audiobook".

ITunes then crashes without an error code and creates a dump file.

I tried changing the mp3 to AAC, but that didn't fix it.

I can make all other changes on the "Get Info" interface with no problems.

I've done this often in the past with no problem.

Hello Oceans77,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to change the media type of a certain file in iTunes, as it causes iTunes to unexpectedly quit. To help with this issue, please follow the steps in this Apple resource on your situation, like starting iTunes in Safe Mode and testing in a new user.

Seems to work without issue here.

Is the option Keep iTunes Media folder organized enabled under Edit > Preferences > Advanced? If so try turning it off and see if that has any impact on the situation. If it does I would suggest you look at Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.

Otherwise try the full tear down and rebuild steps in the second box of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates, in case your previous attempt wasn't thorough enough.

Alternatively see if using a third party app such as those mentioned at Audiobooks on iPods helps.

Hi Joseph,

I followed through with the article you referenced.

I tried the same change in Safe Mode.

I tried it with a new Library. I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.

All gave me the same crash.

The crash happens before I hit the Apply button on the window.

As soon as I select "Audiobook" from the Media Kind menu it quits and creates a dump file.

I am also able to make the change on my other laptop, same iTunes version.

I'm not connected to the Internet or any mobile device.

So, it doesn't seem to be the library, iTunes, or the file......

I'm at a loss as to what to change next to test.

Any ideas?

Thanks for replying, Oceans77, and that additional info, it really helps! Since this seems to be isolated to this specific computer, your next step is to make a backup of your personal data and reinstall Windows on this computer with the steps from these Microsoft resources:
