Mail issues

As of today I can not receive or send mail in Apple mail. Version 9.3. Macbook Pro. OS version 10.11.6. The server is yahoo. Mail says connecting but after a long time it times out. Sometimes it says can not verify account name or password. Or:

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account ********* or try again.

The server returned the error: The connection to the server “plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com” on port 995 timed out.

I can send and receive mail using the browser safari on yahoo mail, and also on my iphone without issues. It's only on my laptop that mail does not work.

I don't want to delete the account because then I will loose all my messages currently filed on the mail program.

Can anybody offer any solutions? Thanks.

One option to save your messages is to go to Mail/Mailbox/Export Mailbox. You can then delete the account and add it back. Then Mail/File/Import Mailboxes. Rearrange as desired.

I see that you are unable to send or receive email on your MacBook Pro. I see that you have done some isolation of the issue by trying to send/receive through Safari on the Yahoo Mail page. Thanks for your reply. I read the article and found it quite informative, ao I saved it for future refernce. The problem resolved itself on it's own after three days. So I suspect it was a server (yahoo) issue. Again, many thanks for responsing to my question.
