"Your system is infected with (3) Viruses” when opening a Safari tab

This message came up when I was opening a new window in the Safari browser and makes all sorts of threats if I don’t call Apple Support at 1-866-726-**** and follow Virus removal procedure immediately. I’m always wary of these things and just want to know if anyone else has run across this particular warning.

Note for BDAqua's link.

Make sure to follow ONLY the manual instructions. Clicking on either of the very front-and-center links to use CleanMyMacX or ComboCleaner would only succeed in trading one piece of trash for another.

Thomas Reed (member here and now working at MalwareBytes) has noted that you can put the name of any app for Windows or Mac you want to remove in a web search and you will hit hundreds of sites pushing you to download some tool to do the work for you. They've found that in many (such as, MOST) cases, the tool is more dangerous than what you're trying to remove from your drive.

I have the same popup you have 3 virus warning every time I am on Safari Kijiji search. I can't search Kijiji because it pops up every 30 seconds. Your previous advice doesn't work to remove this. I even did a complete system restore. Still there. Force shut down of Safari, Malwarebytes says all clean. So my question is "Is there anything to stop this other than anything that has be advised so far because I have tried it all

People like me keep posting because we know its a scam but that doesn't fix the problem. It is a continuous annoying pop up that prevents you from using Safari. No advice given so far has helped, unless I have missed something. I have forced shut, deleted everything, complete system restore 2x Malwarebytes, clean my Mac ...so the question isn't whether or not it is a scam but how do you get rid of it???

It is entirely possible that the website has been altered and those JavaScript popups are embedded into the web page. There is nothing you can do to stop that besides avoiding the website. That is what the instructions about Force Quitting Safari and starting up with Shift key held down are for. If the website is compromised, there is nothing you can do besides maybe try to contact the webmaster and report it. It may be that they are complicit, though.

You could try blocking JavaScript, but that would likely render the website useless.

The second cause of perpetual popups is you have installed Adware. That has also been covered ad infinitum.

This is a new one though

It's not new at all. It's been around for years.

And, it's not any different.

The attackers prey on the ignorance of their targets.

There is not any way possible for anyone to view your Mac through your router from outside without you actively enabling that connection.

It is the same scam. It may use different words and pictures, but it is the same scam.

It is always a scam.

Yes, I got that pop-up several times and finally thought it was really from Apple. I had a nice long talk with a man with a heavy accent who was desperate to have me buy his $600 protection plan! He would not let my computer go until I told him I felt like I was being kidnapped. Don't know who they were-- he said they were authorized by Apple, but I doubt it.

And do not ever call a phone number from a popup like that. They are trying to steal your identity and take over your computer.

When you get such a phony website, sometimes it is hard to get rid of it.

The keys command-option-escape can be held down together to open the Force Quit window, where you can select the web browsers that are open (Chrome, Safari, Firefox), and force quit them. When you reopen the browser, hold the shift key, so it does not restore the last browsing session or gives you the option to prevent it.

It is possible if this is happening that you got infected with a trojan horse at an earlier time. http://www.etrecheck.com/

will make a report of what is installed, that we can help you examine to determine if one did get installed.
